New Release: The Gorilla Guide To…® Modern Object Storage for Cloud-Native Applications, Express Edition!

Large enterprises are hoarders: they find everything useful, including any and all data on clients, vendors, and their own activities. The reason is that all this information can be leveraged for business advantage—analytics can turn up new insights even on historical data, and modern machine learning strengthens the hunger for data.

This creates an urgent need for a place to put all that data. And object storage, made famous by Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), is very attractive for data sets that grow quickly and get huge. Object storage is more compact—and therefore cheaper for the amount of data stored—than traditional files or block storage. Object storage can also scale more easily.

This is strongly relevant to the exploding cloud model of of computing. Applications are rapidly moving to containers and microservices, so storage should follow. Putting storage into containers gives it access to the same benefits familiar in cloud-native applications, such as the ability to move data to different nodes for replication or performance, and the ability to scale a service to meet demand.

The Gorilla Guide To…® Modern Object Storage for Cloud-Native Applications, Express Edition, delves into modern cloud-based environments to show how object storage fits in, and the challenges it faces. Cloud-based environments are highly volatile—in fact, one of a containers’ defining characteristics is its short lifespan. They’re constantly being created and destroyed, so getting persistent storage into those environments to support stateful applications is quite a trick.

This Guide also shows how the Container Storage Interface (CSI) and Container Object Storage Interface (COSI) standards provide storage to Kubernetes, as well as how Scality ARTESCA solutions, offered by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, make working with object storage in the cloud a breeze.
