New Release: The Gorilla Guide to…® VMware vRealize Operations 8.1
System administration has been standardized at ever-higher levels over the past two decades, as the number and variety of systems to be administered have increased. Tallying incidents in log files has been replaced by dashboards that instantly bring anomalies to the administrator’s eyes. Alerts that warn the team of imminent crashes have given way to continuous analytics that identify problems well in advance.
All these changes are required as corporations run tens of thousands of instances of applications, containers, and servers, and especially as DevOps and Agile methods have allowed them to roll out new versions of applications every few hours.
For years, system administrators would throw together tools by hand to augment their capabilities. Companies emerged to offer third-party tools to take on the job. VMware vRealize is a comprehensive tool, integrated across a range of VMware offerings, to provide the benefits of modern analytics, recommendation systems, and visualizations to VMware administrators. VMware vRealize is a new name for VMware vCenter Operations Manager, with extensive new capabilities.
For instance, VMware vRealize helps tame the hordes of obtrusive alerts that overwhelm many administrators. Using analytics to determine which alerts are rare or frequent, and which represent urgent problems, VMware vRealize’s alert system—part of the vRealize Operations service—suppresses the trivial ones and ranks the important ones to guide the administrator in which to tackle first. Figure 1 shows an example where alerts are tagged yellow or red to show priority.
VMware vRealize also provides automated load balancing at a more sophisticated level than previous VMware tools, moving instances during low-activity periods, and monitors some 20 common applications and tools.
The Gorilla Guide to VMware vRealize Operations 8.1 and Cloud will show you how to make VMware vRealize part of your deployment strategy, including troubleshooting and regulatory compliance. The book also explains the architecture, system requirements, the VMware-hosted cloud option, and the main pieces you administer.
