New Release: The Gorilla Guide to… DBOps: Bringing IT Operations and Database Professionals Together, Express Edition!

Are you curious about what the acronym DBOps means? Well, then you need to pick up the latest release in the Gorilla Guide library of titles, The Gorilla Guide To…® DBOps. By the time you’re finished reading this book, you’ll have a solid grasp on how your operations can be improved by implementing DBOps. You’ll also learn about products you can use to help get you there.

The book explains how DBOps can bring IT operations and database professionals together to streamline and improve your business operations. Chapter 1 lays the groundwork for DBOps and how to manage risk for database deployments. Chapter 2 takes a close look at query performance in databases, providing key insights into improving user experience and query processing times. Finally, Chapter 3 explores the ins and outs of combining continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) methods with database deployments, based on agile frameworks as they apply to application builds.

Because your database is the basis for your applications, it can be more challenging than working with your application tier. This is especially true when it comes to CI/CD, since application code is generally considered safe to deploy. You can easily do A/B testing while automatically routing traffic away from a problematic instance of your web tier. Because web and application servers are stateless, rollback is an easy process.

Databases, on the other hand, present more difficulties. Even if you’ve designed a horizontally scalable data model sharded across multiple databases, for example, you might encounter performance problems on only one of your shards due to differences in data distributions (see Figure 1). It’s issues like this, among others, that DBOps helps overcome. Implementing proper DBOps processes will ultimately result in better applications, as the silos are broken down between IT and DBAs and they work together on solutions. That’s the bottom line, isn’t it?
